Speaking Stick is built to collect as little as possible. There are no accounts, no ads, and calls are never recorded. This page explains exactly what we handle and why.

Video calls on this website

When you join a room, we handle:

  • The name you type, shown to others in the room.
  • The room name from the link you opened.
  • A random browser ID, stored in your browser so a page refresh rejoins you as the same person. Our server only sees a one-way scrambled version of it, which is how the host's “remove” works.
  • Your camera, microphone and chat, sent live to the other people in the room. They pass through our call provider but are not recorded or stored by us. Your microphone is only sent while you hold the stick.

Room details (who's the host, who holds the stick, and who was removed) exist only while the room is open. A room closes about 10 minutes after the last person leaves, and its details are deleted.

The Discord bot

When the bot runs a session in your Discord server, it handles:

  • Discord IDs for the server, the voice channel, and the people in it, plus the display names it shows on the control panel.
  • Any note you type when you request the stick.
  • The IDs of people the bot muted, so it can unmute them later, even if they left before the session ended.

Session details are deleted when the session ends. Someone's ID stays on the “owed an unmute” list only until the bot has unmuted them. The bot doesn't read your server's messages.

Technical information

Like most websites, our hosting and call providers receive your IP address and basic technical details (such as your browser type) when you connect. We use IP addresses briefly to prevent abuse, for example to limit how many rooms one person can create in a short time.

Who we share it with

We don't sell your information or use it for advertising. We rely on these providers to run the service:

  • Vercel hosts the website.
  • LiveKit carries the live audio and video.
  • Discord, if you use the bot. Discord's own privacy policy applies there.

Your choices

  • You can join with your camera off.
  • You can leave a room or a Discord session at any time.
  • You can clear the browser ID by clearing this site's data in your browser.
  • You can ask us questions about your information, or ask us to delete it, using the contact details below.

Children

Speaking Stick isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If we change how we handle information, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
